TRUJILLO ALTO, Puerto Rico (EFE).- La antropóloga inglesa Jane Goodall, quien se encuentra en Puerto Rico para promover su programa de conservación “Raíces y Retoños”, lamentó hoy que se destruyan bosques para construir edificios y viviendas.

“Cada vez que viajo, me he dado cuenta que le estamos haciendo un daño al planeta. Nosotros, que tenemos el intelecto, estamos contaminando el aire, la tierra y el agua”, enfatizó Goodall a unos 150 estudiantes que asistieron a una charla en la Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín, en Trujillo Alto, ciudad aledaña a San Juan.

Goodall, de 75 años, indicó que debido a la deforestación en varios países de África y a la captura de animales salvajes para comercializar ilegalmente su carne, sólo visita la selva dos veces al año y ha decidido viajar y ofrecer charlas educativas sobre la problemática.

“Cada uno de nosotros puede hacer una diferencia diariamente. Hay que escoger qué tipo de diferencia vamos a crear”, enfatizó.

La respuesta a su llamado no se hizo esperar pues varios estudiantes manifestaron que en sus escuelas han creado programas de reciclaje, limpieza de playas, así como siembras de vegetales como maíz, pimientos, tomates y calabazas, arroz y habichuelas, y plantas medicinales.

Goodall explicó que su amor por la naturaleza comenzó en Inglaterra, cuando de pequeña leyó un cuento de “Tarzán”.
